Mount Melville : Around St Andrews

St Andrews has some superb beaches which are maintained to the highest standards. These are the East           Sands near the harbour.

The harbour is still home to some active small fishing boats as well as leisure craft

In the Middle Ages, St Andrews Cathedral was the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church in    Scotland.  Destroyed following the Reformation in the 16th century only the ruins now remain but try to imagine  what an extraordinary building this must have been

As well as sunning yourself on the grass within the cathedral you can climb St Rule's Tower

Which affords an amazing view of the town and surrounding area

Along the shore, the Castle is also worth a visit.  It was the residence of the bishops and  archbishops of St Andrews. You can view the grisly bottle dungeon and the seige mine and counter-mine. Both  Castle and Cathedral are in the care of Historic Scotland
